Our Solution

Lighting Designers Michael Riotto and Katie Haas, of MRD were presented with 2 unique challenges when designing the renovated Royal Promenade and Izumi Restaurant. The first task was to create a dynamic lighting program for the ship’s central promenade, while preventing all light trespass into the newly added guest cabins overlooking the famed atrium space. For this application, the Designers instantly looked to Vice because of their precise optical control. The custom RGBW grazing solution required multiple calculations and a full-scale mock-up to determine the exact beam needed to prevent all light trespass. The result was a colorful and kinetic lighting experience, using a wall mounted linear grazer, which blended seamlessly with the architecture, and achieved complete cutoff.

The second task was to evenly illuminate an entire mural wall, with a limited setback of only 16”. The fixture also needed to be robust enough to withstand the vibration of the ship, while remaining visually discreet from below. For this, Katie chose the L6 Kick-Reflector linear which was installed with only a 12” offset to achieve uniform illumination of the artwork.
